▲ Exhaust Gas-Driven Absorption Chiller-Heater Integrated with a Semiconductor Firing Furnace
SAMJUNG TECH (CEO Jong-wan Choi), a specialist in thermally driven refrigeration systems, is strengthening its competitiveness in the industrial HVAC market by developing and supplying high-efficiency heating and cooling systems and environmentally friendly energy solutions.
Its major products include low-temperature exhaust gas-driven absorption chillers utilizing waste heat from fuel cells and other sources; hybrid absorption chillers driven simultaneously by exhaust gas and low-temperature hot water recovered from gas engines and other equipment; ultra-low-temperature hot water-driven adsorption chillers utilizing waste heat from immersion cooling systems and industrial processes; and triple-effect absorption chillers featuring world-class energy efficiency.
The low-temperature exhaust gas-driven absorption chiller produces chilled water by utilizing exhaust gas at approximately 300°C generated from solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), firing furnaces, and other industrial equipment. Developed for the first time in Korea, the system has been installed at numerous sites and operates reliably 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, contributing to energy conservation and carbon neutrality.
The ultra-low-temperature hot water-driven adsorption chiller produces chilled water using hot water at temperatures of 55–60°C recovered from immersion cooling systems and industrial processes. Developed through a government-funded research project, the product has reached the prototype evaluation and demonstration stage. In particular, adsorption chillers driven by hot water at 65–70°C from phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFCs), solar thermal systems, industrial processes, and fourth-generation district heating systems have already been commercialized and are operating successfully at multiple sites.
Waste heat generated at industrial facilities varies in temperature, flow rate, and heat transfer characteristics, making it difficult to apply a uniform generator design across different applications.
To address these challenges, SAMJUNG TECH has independently developed high-efficiency generator design technology that maximizes heat transfer performance while minimizing pressure loss according to the characteristics of different waste heat sources. This technology enables the effective utilization of relatively low-temperature waste heat while ensuring both system efficiency and operational stability.
The company has also secured specialized thermodynamic cycle design technology optimized for individual heat source characteristics. By optimizing system cycles according to heat source temperature, available heat capacity, and load conditions, SAMJUNG TECH enables more efficient utilization of waste heat across various industrial applications.
In addition, SAMJUNG TECH has developed integrated control technology that comprehensively manages heat source and solution circulation rates, generator temperature, and liquid levels. This technology allows the system to maintain optimal operating conditions under varying circumstances and respond proactively to changes in heat source conditions, thereby improving operational stability and reliability.
Demonstration Results: Waste Heat Recovery from Semiconductor Firing Furnaces
Through a demonstration of an exhaust gas-driven absorption heat pump integrated with waste heat recovery from a semiconductor firing furnace, SAMJUNG TECH verified a maximum heating capacity of 588 kW. Approximately five months of operation demonstrated energy savings of 952 MWh, CO₂ emission reductions of 435 tCO₂, and energy cost savings of approximately KRW 171 million.
Furthermore, in an SOFC exhaust gas-based cooling system, SAMJUNG TECH replaced conventional electric air-conditioning equipment used to cool an electrical room with an exhaust gas-driven absorption heat pump utilizing waste heat generated by fuel cells. The system demonstrated annual electricity savings of 525.6 MWh and carbon emission reductions of 249.3 tCO₂.
CEO INTERVIEW
Jong-wan Choi, CEO of SAMJUNG TECH, stated, “Demonstration results of a steam-driven absorption system utilizing waste heat generated from industrial processes confirmed a reduction of more than 90% in daily electricity consumption compared with the conventional system.”
He added, “These results demonstrate that utilizing continuously generated industrial waste heat for process cooling can significantly reduce the high electricity consumption associated with conventional electric chillers.”
